Do you suffer from insomnia or are you just tired of not having a good night’s sleep? Did you know that there is an herb that is used to relieve insomnia, anxiety and nervousness? This natural and herbal sleep aid is called valerian root.
Valerian root is derived from valerian (Valeriana officinalis), a perennial flowering plant of the Valerianaceae family. The plant has sweet fragrant pink or white flowers that bloom in summer.
Valerian (often misspelled “valerian”) was born in Europe and parts of Asia and now gros in North America.
Valerian root contains volatile oils, including valeric acids, less volatile sesquiterpenes and valepotriates (esters of short-chain fatty acids). These active ingredients are probably responsible for the ability of valerian root to produce a calming and restorative effect on the body’s central nervous system.
Valerian has been used as a medicinal herb at least since the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Hippocrates described its properties, and Galen later prescribed it as a cure for insomnia.
