Saw palmetto extract is taken from the deep purple fruit of the Saw palmetto palm, which is known as Serenoa repens. It grows like a tree or shrub and has lush, green leaves that scatter from its prickly stem.
The benefits of Saw palmetto have been known for a long time. In fact, the palm plant was used for medicine by Native Americans in the southeastern United States, and in the early 20th century, men used the fruit to treat urinary tract problems and increase sperm production – in addition to maintaining prostate health.
It is also used to increase urine flow, promote relaxation and enhance sexual desire.
Saw palmetto also has the power to help with colds, coughs and sore throats, asthma, chronic bronchitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome and migraine headaches.
Preserves and increases testosterone levels – Because Saw palmetto inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone – a sex steroid and androgen hormone), the body maintains normal testosterone levels. High testosterone levels increase strength, endurance, sexual desire and help burn fat more easily.
Relieves the condition of an enlarged prostate – The prostate gland can become inflamed or enlarged with age in men. The prostate then compresses the urethra, leading to difficulty urinating, leading to bladder infections or bladder stones. Saw palmetto inhibits testosterone by binding and stimulating prostate cells, which reduces prostate cell proliferation and prostate enlargement.
Reduces the risk of prostate cancer – Saw palmetto acts as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor – which means it slows down the conversion of testosterone to DHT by blocking the enzyme and preventing its formation. According to research, DHT is responsible for prostate enlargement, which may be the cause of prostate cancer.
Helps with hair loss – Saw palmetto extracts and supplements work as a hair loss remedy because they maintain balanced testosterone levels. As men get older, the hormone testosterone decreases and the hormone called 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) increases. Usually, once one hair falls out, another hair begins to grow from that same follicle – but if DHT is high, hair growth decreases. The benefits of Saw palmetto have the power to stop the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which makes it beneficial for hair growth.
